Day Three: Celebration! (or we're the best, better than the rest!)

This was the finals day. And true to form, the women's team swept to an easy victory to claim the gold medal. Junko "I shouldn't have lost" bouncing back from a close loss decimated the number one of the Victoria? Team while Julia "kickass" Crockett, Anne-Maree "is it over already?" Wong and Andrea "I need a hot boy" O'Brien swept through their finals in record time and without breaking a sweat.
The Auckland women's B team had completed all their matches the previous day and were sleeping off their hangovers (spew? What spew?-Sinead) by the time the Auckland men's C team left at 12 (hey, aren't we supposed to be there by 10? -Marcus). The Auckland mens C team bravely destroyed their opponents in a fight for 7th place. In fact they were so scary the other team didn't show up. The Auckland mens C team got so bored in fact that Hayden "in the navy" Clarke challenged the bored women's A team. The challenge against the Men's C team was unmet as the fearsome foursome of studliness looked too deadly (yeah as if, I was getting lunch - Julia).

Our hero Hayden

The Auckland men's A team battle for the gold against Victoria A was a nailbiting and long affair with Anthony "I'm pumped….full of steroids!" Burnett was edged out in a three set thriller that showcased some spectacular shots. Johnny "the slapper" Tang won his match with ease while they both combined to take the doubles. It was two all as Risto "I'll just serve into his body then" Cvetkovic lost his singles while David "short shorts" Borland took out his singles match. The gold medal was in the bag on a countback as Anthony's singles match sealed the win. The final of the men's finals ended with a dummy doubles match between David against Victoria A and Risto. It had everything, drama, shotmaking and power especially in the serves.

The drama of the day though was the epic battle of Hayden "marathon man" Clarke's substituting for Stian "the Viking" Madshus. This was the match for the plate (which was in the bag already with sterling performances by Al, David and Daniel). What began as a substitute singles match became a four hour-long epic match of mind-numbing proportions. Hayden, brilliant with his shotmaking and fearsome power was playing Arantxa Sanchez Vicario from Victoria B for the match which was more noted for the long and boring rallies rather than the points won but the man did it! He persevered and along the way brought the entire Auckland team together, conquered sleep and boredom and ended the entire competition over three days with a resounding cheer and high note. There will be many legends to come out of this battle (Hayden, how did you stop yourself from falling asleep against that guy?).

At the end of the day, and after the long match, awards ceremony was carried out. The Auckland team won the men's gold, women's gold and the consolation plate. So it was well worth the effort and it was well worth the fun. What had begun as a tournament ended as an experience that many would never forget. Julia, Junko, and Anthony were selected for a combined New Zealand University representative team. And everyone deservedly won the gold medals and overall tennis cup.

The night was ripe for celebrations. After a hearty dinner (the Auckland victorious tennis team…powered by KFC!), the team relaxed out at the motel spa and had a dinner and a few drinks before heading to the games ceremony. We got there early and so Johnny got drunk really early. The night was raucous and festive with everyone cheering loud for their university. It came down to mountain biking to decide the shield and at the end of the night, Auckland university won the overall sports shield!!!! We won it for the first time in 13 years!

So the trip is to be remembered with fondness. Who could forget Anthony's drinking, Junko's A game, The sight of Fraser in Julia's hoodie, Risto and Johnny's love affair, David Burcher and anyone else really's love affair, Sinead and Claire's power chundering, Marcus's pathfinding, Tim's guitar playing, Al's incredibly sexy automobile, Ben's dolphins, Hayden's epic match, Andrea's scoring, Keri's shoes, Daniel's love of KFC, Stian's dance moves, Anne-Maree's love of men, Cynthia's love of massage (I don't think there was love in the massage. Haha… I am the pom pom girl) and David Borland's shorts…..yes, there were many memories, memories to last a lifetime.
